Saint Laurent Productions is proud to announce that the long feature film The Fence, directed by Claire Denis, has been selected for the Main Slate of the New York Film Festival
This comes in addition to the recent confirmation that Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother has been selected as the Centerpiece of the 63rd New York Film Festival (NYFF).
Claire Denis’ film, co-produced by Saint Laurent Productions and Anthony Vaccarello, follows the selection of Father Mother Sister Brother by Jim Jarmusch for this year’s Venice Film Festival. This marks another major festival appearance for
Saint Laurent Productions after being present at the Cannes Film Festival for two consecutive years — in 2023 with
the short films Strange Way of Life by Pedro Almodóvar and Trailer of the Film That Will Never Exist by Jean-Luc Godard,
in 2024 with three feature films in competition Emilia Perez by Jacques Audiard, Parthenope by Paolo Sorrentino, and The Shrouds by David Cronenberg.
THE FENCE
Directed by Claire Denis
The film stars: Isaach de Bankolé, Matt Dillon, Mia McKenna-Bruce, Tom Blyth.
Synopsis
A vast public works project in West Africa. Horn, the construction site manager, and Cal, a young engineer, share lodging behind the double gates of their compound. Leone, Horn’s recent bride, comes to join them the same night that a man appears at the fence.
His name is Alboury. Like a specter in the darkness, he demands the body of his brother who died earlier that day on the site.
He will hound the two men all night long until they return it, as Leone watches the disaster play out before her.
Director’s Bio
Claire Denis spent her childhood in several African countries, notably Cameroon. Upon returning to France in her teenage years, she discovered cinema thanks to a teacher and the high school’s film club. In 1973, she graduated from IDHEC and became
an assistant director. At IDHEC, she met Agnès Godard, who would become her director of photography along the years. In 1988, her first film Chocolat, shot in Cameroon, competed at the Cannes Film Festival, was acclaimed by American critics. More than twenty films followed, all presented at the most prestigious international festivals. These include Nénette and Boni (Golden Leopard at the Locarno Festival in 1996), High Life (starring Robert Pattinson, presented at the Toronto Festival in 2018), Both Sides of the Blade
(Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin Festival in 2022), Stars at Noon (Grand Prix at the Cannes Festival 2022), and Beau Travail, shot in Djibouti and designated the 7th greatest film of all time in 2022 by a group of critics for the British magazine Sight and Sound.
